Perfect weather for ski races, Community Loppet at Stoney Island

January 17, 2017

The sun was shining and there was plenty of snow, perfect conditions for the annual ski races and Community Loppet, Saturday, hosted by the Kincardine Cross-Country Ski Club at Stoney Island Conservation Area, located on the B-line (Bruce County Road 23), just north of Kincardine hospital.

About a dozen racers strapped on their skis to participate. The thaw and rain during the week made the course icy and fast, but there was just enough snowfall Friday afternoon to give skiers some control.

This was an exciting event, with several races going on within the race. Only three seconds separated the first- and second-place finishers. The skiers in third, fourth, fifth and sixth were tightly bunched, while the last two skiers had the same time after a frantic race down the meadow to the finish line.

The results for the four-kilometre adult race:

  1. John Welwood, Kincardine, 17:50
  2. Steve Booth, London, 17:53
  3. Elena Nardozzi, London, 22:25
  4. Kevin Nussey, Kincardine, 22:59
  5. Jana Mika, Kincardine, 23:12
  6. Karel Mika, Kincardine, 23:15
  7. Glen Norcliffe, Kincardine, 28:46
  8. Sakari Halopainen, Kincardine, 28:46

Under 15 years of age, two-kilometre race:

  1. Dana Daetwyler, Kincardine, 11:34

About 15 people joined in the Community Ski Loppet, touring the trails at Stoney Island, led by Glen Norcliffe and John Melinz of the cross-country ski club. One group went on a two-kilometre run on flat terrain, while the other group went on a four-kilometre run with two small hills.

The afternoon ended with hot apple cider at the ski club hut.
