Huron Heights Lightning Hawks win boys regional basketball championship

The Huron Heights Lightning Hawks boys basketball team of Kincardine, has won the South West Regional championship.

The Lightning Hawks competed at the tournament for boys and girls teams, held Wednesday at Kincardine District Secondary School. Joining Huron Heights, were teams from Ripley, Lucknow and Elgin Market (girls only).

The Huron Heights boys came away with the championship banner, with Ripley as the runner-up.

With only three teams in competition, the Lightning Hawks played both Ripley and Lucknow twice. First up, were the always-competitive boys from Ripley. Huron Heights took a 30-18 win, led by Justin Nesbitt with 10 points, Mack Beisel with seven and Jordan Beisel with six.

In Game 2, the boys faced Lucknow, and came away with a resounding 83-23 win. Leading the team in scoring were Zach McCabe with 12 points, Matt McCabe and Mack Beisel with 11 each, and Jordan Beisel with 10.

Game 3 was a rematch against Ripley, and the Lightning Hawks came out flying, taking a 40-17 win to clinch the championship. Leading the team again, were Justin Nesbitt with an amazing 17 points, followed by Jordan Beisel and Wilson Shipp with eight points each.

With the tournament already decided, the boys played Lucknow one more time, and finished with a 68-28 victory. Twins Matt and Zach McCabe each contributed 14 points, with Cody McLelland contributing 12 and Jordan Moulton chipping in for 10.

With their win, the Lightning Hawks have qualified for the Bluewater finals, slated for April 11 in Flesherton.
