First Richard Yun award presented at Ecole Elgin Market Grade 8 graduation

June 26, 2017

Four graduates and their families, along with the staff of Ecole Elgin Market Public School, gathered at the school, Monday night, for the second Grade 8 graduation since becoming a full French Immersion school in 2011.

Principal Marga Wilson welcomed everyone and congratulated the graduates: Kenzie Ford, Abigail Lange, Liane Mercanti and Abby Shields. Bluewater District School Board trustee Jan Johnstone also gave some opening remarks.

Kenzie presented her valedictorian speech, and the girls received their Grade 8 graduation diplomas.

The awards were then presented, including a new one, the Richard Yun memorial award for science and technology, presented by his wife, Karen, to Kenzie Ford. Yun was a mentor with the Kinetic Knights robotics team (FRC Team 781) and a strong advocate for education, science and technology. He died in March, 2017.

The remaining awards were presented:

  • French award - Liane Mercanti
  • Home and School Community award - Abigail Lange
  • Ontario Principals' Council Leadership award - Kenzie Ford
  • Academic Excellence award - Abigail Lange
  • CUPE award - Abby Shields
  • Alisa Feick French Proficiency award - Kenzie Ford

Following the ceremony, photos were taken, and a dinner was served. The graduates then provided a musical performance to end the evening.
