Davidson wants framed Paul Henderson sweater hanging in Davidson Centre

December 9, 2017

Keith Davidson (above) wants more notoriety for one of Kincardine's famous native sons, Paul Henderson.

Former Kincardine recreation director, Davidson came to Kincardine council Wednesday night (Dec. 6) and spoke during public forum. He urged council to hang a framed Henderson hockey sweater at the Davidson Centre so more people can read the famous story of Henderson's birth on the ice and his ride to the Kincardine hospital.

"Brad (Kirkconnell) and I and the Canada Day committee were discussing this idea," said Davidson, holding up an autographed Henderson hockey sweater which would be put in the frame along with a write-up about Henderson's famous birth and the iconic photo of Henderson's 1972 goal at the Summit Series. There would also be a notation that people can view the original plaque and configuration (work of art) which are located at the entrance to the Kincardine hospital.

Davidson said he disagreed with former Kincardine chief administrative officer Murray Clarke who said the plaque and artwork should be at the Davidson Centre so more people would see it.

"No, I believe the hospital is the right place for that sculpture," he said, "but he was right about the fact that more people would see it at the Davidson Centre. So, in order for everyone to read this famous story, we'd like to have this autographed Paul Henderson sweater framed and hung up in the Davidson Centre. This is Kincardine at its best."

"We're all big Paul Henderson fans," said mayor Anne Eadie. "You make some good points. We'll have to discuss it with staff and consider what we can do, but we will definitely do our best by Paul Henderson. We have such a great story about him, and we want to honour that."
