Wiegersma's brace leads Huron United to win over SFC Suspects
The Huron United Football Club secured a much-needed win, with a 2-1 victory over the SFC Suspects, Tuesday (Aug. 20) in Listowel.

Huron United was careful and deliberate with possession early, generating near misses in tight for attackers Jason Leiskau, Drew Cobean, and Adam Carty.

Goalkeeper Aidan Calcutt rose to the occasion when the Suspects did manage to breach the Huron United backline, which was led by a stalwart performance from Murray Martin.

Martin then flashed his offensive awareness in the 24th minute, launching an indirect kick from deep in his own half that skipped and fooled the Suspects keeper, allowing Andrew Wiegersma to knock in the opener in the subsequent scramble.

An uneven stretch toward the end of the first half gave Calcutt the opportunity to show off his reaction time with a series of leaping saves.

The visitors drew even early in the second half after an inch-perfect through ball sent the Suspects striker in alone on Calcutt. Wiegersma restored the Huron United lead in the 65th minute with a shot so forceful that the Suspects keeper made a business decision and elected not to even make an attempt on the ball. The assist went to Simon Andonian off a pass from A. Carty.

Calcutt came up huge again on a Suspects free kick, diving to peel the shot out of the bottom corner. Cobean nearly rewarded him at the other end moments later, but his shot sizzled just over the bar.

The Suspects’ pursuit of an equalizer kept Calcutt active, and he denied multiple premium chances down the stretch, much to the frustration of the visiting bench. Midfielder Adam Holley was also instrumental in the closing sequence with his clever touches and maintenance of possession.

Man of the Match went to Martin for his stand-out offensive and defensive contributions, with honourable mentions to Calcutt, Holley, Gerrit Satosek, and Wiegersma.

Huron United is playing out of the Tri-City Men's Soccer League again this season. Its roster is composed of players from Kincardine, Port Elgin, and surrounding areas. The team can be followed at www.kdslsoccer.com/teams/default.asp?u=KDSL&s=soccer&p=home.
