Kincardine seeks applicants to fill seat of the late councillor Doug Kennedy
Kincardine council has declared vacant the seat of the late councillor Doug Kennedy and is now seeking applicants for this Ward 1 position.
At the council meeting Wednesday night (Sept. 11), council agreed to go with option two which is to fill the vacancy through an appointment process.
“Interested candidates may begin exploring the process of applying on our website at
www.kincardine.ca/CouncilVacancy,” said clerk Jennifer Lawrie, in a press release, issued Monday.
The application period opens Monday, Sept. 23, at 9 a.m., and will remain open until Friday, Oct. 25, at 3 p.m.
The appointment is set to occur at a special meeting of council, Nov. 6, at 5 p.m. in the council chamber at the municipal administration centre in Kincardine.
“The council appointment meeting gives each certified candidate an opportunity to speak before council,” said Lawrie. “Then, during the open meeting, a vote selects from the candidates the new councillor for Ward 1. The successful candidate takes the oath of office and, through bylaw, begins acting in the role.”
The term will become effective from the date of appointment through to the swearing in of the next council elected in the 2026 municipal and school board election.
Those with an interest in applying to become councillor for Ward 1 must:
- Reside in or be the owner or tenant of land in the Municipality of Kincardine, or the spouse of such owner or tenant
- Be a Canadian citizen
- Be at least 18 years old
- Not be prohibited from voting under Section 17(3) of the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 or otherwise by law.
