Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Board announces outstanding EQAO results

September 27, 2024

The Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Board has announced the exceptional performance of its students in the 2023-24 EQAO (Education Quality and Accountability Office) results, with a particular highlight on Grade 6 math assessments which saw a 12 percentage-point increase over the previous year’s results.

The board has been recognized by the Ontario Ministry of Education for surpassing provincial standards, a testament to the dedication of students, staff, and the wider school community.

“We have seen remarkable and consistent growth,” said education director Karyn Bruneel. “Our students' success reflects a collective effort by our teachers, support staff, parents, and community partners.

“We are deeply committed to fostering environments where students can excel, academically, while growing in body, mind, and spirit. This achievement in Grade 6 math is just one example of the fruits of that commitment.”

The board attributes this success to its dedication to innovative and holistic education practices. Through a combination of differentiated instruction, targeted interventions, and the use of technology in the classroom, the board has worked tirelessly to meet the individual learning needs of every student.

“We implement a range of strategies to ensure that all students can reach their full potential,” said Alicia Tilker, special education consultant.

“We have implemented universal screening and a multi-tiered system of support that includes a focus on intervention,” said Melanie Taylor, instructional consultant for literacy.

“We have also focused on practices such as explicit instruction, reading fluency and fact fluency, and retrieval practice, which have played a critical role in achieving these results,” said Carrey Diemert, instructional consultant for mathematics.

The recognition from the education ministry further underscores the board’s leadership in fostering student success across Ontario. The board plans to build on this momentum and expand these best practices to further enhance student achievement in the coming years.

“This is just the beginning,” said board chairperson Lori Di Castri. “We are committed to continuing this success in all areas of student learning and ensuring that every student, at every grade level, receives the support and opportunities they need to thrive.”
