Lydia Treidlinger is new curator at Walker House Museum in Kincardine

September 27, 2024

Lydia Treidlinger has returned to her hometown as the new full-time curator at the Walker House Museum in Kincardine.

She was welcomed by members of the Paddy Walker Heritage Society and patrons of the Walker House, at an afternoon tea, Wednesday.

Society president Sylvia Leigh thanked everyone for attending and said this has been a challenging but successful year at the Walker House. The heating and air-conditioning unit was upgraded, the roof was replaced, the washrooms were renovated, the kitchen was renovated, and now Treidlinger has been hired.

“She’s very enthusiastic,” said Leigh, “and will be helping us catch up on the 20 years when we didn’t have a curator.”

Leigh thanked all the donors and patrons for their continued support of the Walker House, as well as the 11 volunteers who sit on the board and the more than 50 dedicated volunteers who promote Kincardine’s oldest building.

She also made special mention of Paul Pearce for his hard work on the renovations this year, and the Walker House’s dedicated treasurer Helen Orr who was pleased to sign up everyone for the eagerly-anticipated Christmas Teas.

There are numerous items for sale at the Walker House, including special teas (Jane’s and Paddy’s), tea strainers, apple butter, lavender, and much more.

Treidlinger thanked Leigh and the board for the opportunity to work at the Walker House.

“There’s a lot of potential here,” she said. “We’re working on various projects, including an event for Halloween.”

A graduate of chef school, Treidlinger also has a degree in fine art and history, and has worked in the restaurant industry. She is thrilled to be combining all her skills as curator of the museum here in Kincardine.

She plans to put her baking skills to work with afternoon teas at the Walker House. Also in the works are filming oral histories, and embracing new technology such as virtual reality tours of the museum.

Kincardine mayor Kenneth Craig joked that he’s kind of a “curator” because he has a lot of old stuff in his basement and is looking for a way to display it.

But seriously, he commended the Paddy Walker Heritage Society for preserving and maintaining the valuable parts of Kincardine’s history and displaying them for the public at the Walker House.
