Ripley Wolves come back to beat Seaforth, 5-4, in season home-opener
October 14, 2024
The Ripley Wolves and Seaforth Centenaires put on an entertaining show for the large hometown crowd Saturday night in Ripley to kick off the 2024-25 season in the Ontario Elite Hockey League.
The Wolves stumbled out of the gate and showed some off some season rust as they were down, 3-0, after the first period.
The second period was a different story as the Wolves came out strong and then got an early goal less than a minute into the period by Todd Hellyer with Ethan Skinner and Evan Visser picking up assists.
A couple of minutes later, the Wolves scored again to get within one, on a goal by Kaden Hoggarth, assisted by Dan Nicoloff and Garrett Meurs. The score remained at 3-2 for Seaforth heading into the final period.
Seaforth went back up by two goals midway through the third but, again, the Wolves had an answer less then a minute later on a goal by Ethan Skinner, assisted by Visser and Hellyer, to keep Ripley within one, now down 4-3.
Ripley’s Jarred Colling got the game-tying goal a few minutes later, assisted by Gerrit Satosek, and the Wolves grabbed the 5-4 lead late in the third, with captain Garrett Meurs putting one in the net, with assists going to Derek Skinner and Dan Nicoloff.
In the final two minutes Seaforth poured on the pressure but was unable to get one past Wolves goalie Jason Hamilton who stopped 23 shots for the win.
The Wolves host the Erin Outlaws, Saturday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m. in the Den. Game sponsors are Reid's Corners Contracting, Pine River Food, and Waters Edge Irrigation.
Ripley welcomes back the coaching staff led by Mark Whalen and Wade Armstrong, as well as newcomer Troy Loucks. Jeff Richardson returns as trainer as does physiotherapist Kyle Kortegaard. Austin Whalen is the equipment manager this season.
Splitting the general manager duties are Corey McCrae and Dustin Catto.
