Kincardine Minor Hockey remembers Doug Kennedy at Silver Stick Regional
Doug Kennedy was the heartbeat of sports and recreation in Kincardine, and the minor hockey association paid tribute to him at the opening ceremonies of the 37th annual Kincardine Regional Silver Stick Tournament, Friday evening, at the Davidson Centre in Kincardine.

Kennedy, who died in August, was involved in hockey in Kincardine for more than 25 years after moving to the community from St. Marys where he grew up and played Junior “B” hockey.

In the early 1990s, he was instrumental in bringing Junior hockey back to Kincardine, with the formation of the Junior “C” Bulldogs. He was also greatly involved in Kincardine Minor Hockey and Kincardine high school hockey, winning numerous Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA) championships as a coach, and an Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA)
championship as the head coach of the Kincardine District Secondary School (KDSS) boys hockey team in 2012.

Kennedy received two Ontario Hockey Association (OHA) Crystal Puck awards and the Golden Stick award for his outstanding achievements and service to the game.

In his honour, his wife, Cathy Alcombrack, and son, Jeff, dropped the ceremonial puck at the opening of the Silver Stick tournament. Joining them, was Jim McDonald, president of the Kincardine Legion, official sponsor of the Under-13 (U13) “B1” division, along with the Colour Party: Dave Carson, Nicole Chessell, Mike Dupuis, Kevin Martin, John Farrell, and sergeant-at-arms Kirk Rutledge.

MC Ray Luinstra thanked all the sponsors, teams, officials and fans for their support of the Silver Stick Regional Tournament. Besides the Legion, the major sponsors include Dewar Industrial Services, Bruce Power, the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) and Presto Crest.

The opening ceremonies began with the Kincardine Scottish Pipe Band leading the dignitaries to the ice surface, and Ruby Wreford singing “O Canada.”

In Kincardine Kinucks hockey action, Friday night, the U13 team defeated the Saugeen Shores Storm, 3-1, after blanking the Storm, 4-0, earlier in the day. The U15 Kinucks also have two wins under their belts.

The Huron-Bruce U13 Blizzard has a win and a loss, while the U15 Blizzard has two wins.

Games continue Sunday and Monday, with the championship finals set for Monday afternoon at the Davidson Centre in Kincardine. To stay up-to-date on the schedule and scores, visit silverstick.org/Tournaments/25900/Schedule.
