Inaugural Doug Kennedy Memorial Slo-Pitch tournament raises $5,000 for Huron Shores Hospice
The inaugural Doug Kennedy Memorial Slo-Pitch tournament was a huge success, raising $5,000 for Huron Shores Hospice, as well as funds for the Kincardine Bulldogs hockey club.
Held on the weekend, the event drew 20 teams – 12 men’s teams and eight ladies’ teams.
Kennedy’s wife, Cathy Alcombrack, threw out the first pitch of the game, Friday night, surrounded by family, including Doug’s brother, Bob Kennedy, and his wife, Kathie, of Florida.
Organizer Phil Gauthier welcomed everyone and said the loss of Doug last August affected not only his family and friends, but the entire community.
“He had a far-reaching impact across the sports community - locally and beyond,” he said, including the Bulldogs, his hometown hockey team in St. Marys, and Kincardine minor hockey and minor ball.
“Thanks to the organizing committee for putting together this special tournament. Now, let’s go out there and have some competitive fun in memory of Doug.”
Games continued through to Sunday, with the following winners:
- Men’s “A” – the Bad News Bears of Kincardine
- Men’s “B” – The Tribe of Kincardine
- Ladies’ “A” – Black Widows of Owen Sound
- Ladies’ “B” – Douger’s Cougars of Kincardine
