Huron County OPP holding annual Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics

(HURON COUNTY, ON) -  This week marks an annual event in Huron County that our Special Olympians and local Huron County OPP officers look forward to every year.

Thursday, June 11, Huron OPP officers and Special Olympians from all over Huron County will run in-step to help raise funds and promote awareness for Special Olympics Ontario.

The Ontario Law Enforcement Torch run is a community-based event that sees the “Flame of Hope” carried across the province by members of law enforcement agencies. Since the first Law Enforcement Torch Run was first established in Canada in 1987, more than $26-million has been raised in Ontario.

The Huron County Torch Run is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. at the Wingham OPP detachment located on Bristol Terrace.  The run will go through Wingham ending at the south end mall. Participants will then be transported to Blyth, Clinton and Goderich where they will complete a run/walk/stroll in each of those communities. After completing the final leg in Goderich, participants will be treated to a celebration barbecue around 1 p.m. at McGee Motors located on Suncoast Drive East in Goderich.

“This is such an important and meaningful event for our local Special Olympians," says Huron OPP Torch Run co-ordinator sergeant Russ Nesbitt. "I encourage our host communities to come out and participate this year. Whether you join us for the actual run, make a personal donation or cheer on our participants, your enthusiasm and community spirit does not go unnoticed. Please come out and catch the spirit!”

Bus transportation from Goderich to Wingham will be provided free of charge. Please arrive at the Goderich OPP detachment, located on Courthouse Square, prior to 8 a.m.
