The Grades 7 and 8 Core French class at St. Anthony's School, participated in "La Course Fantastique," an Amazing Race-style event throughout downtown Kincardine, Wednesday.
Students stopped at a number of locations, including the Davidson Centre pool, J'Adorn, Kincardine Public Library, the Kincardine Lighthouse and Marine Museum, the Independent, and the Kincardine Tourism office.
At each location, the students met up with a French-speaking individual and asked questions (all in French) to determine a specific spot and prop with which to take a group selfie.
The day also included an opportunity to order lunch in French at the Bruce Steakhouse (a set menu was translated into French and Julie Lafond graciously volunteered her time to take orders "en Français").
This event was organized in order to provide an authentic French-speaking opportunity for students in a local environment. They were encouraged to take risks by speaking French outside of their normal classroom environment and outside of interacting with their peers.
The students obtained valuable experience speaking and problem-solving in a second language. They also learned that French-speaking opportunities are available everywhere they go, even in Kincardine.
