GEORGE EDWARD CHIN

George Edward Chin, formerly of Lucknow and the famous “Chin Line” in amateur hockey, died peacefully, Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2023, at the age of 94. He was married to Coral (Kong) for 65 years. They have four daughters, Sharine (Dave), Leanne (Andrew), Corina (Art), and Lisa (Randy), and eight grandchildren, Jason, Justin, Sarah, Caitlyn, Evan, Kristin Joy, Niah, and Kira. George was the seventh son of the seventh son in a family of 14 children. He was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Rose Chin; and his siblings, Jim (Nancy), Sam, Harry, Frank (Sandy), William (Mary), Albert, Gladys, Margaret (Douglas), and Charles (Rose). Lovingly remembered by siblings, Mary (George), Morley (Gladys), Jack (Jessie), and Alan (Anne); and numerous nieces and nephews. George was born in Lucknow, July 28, 1929. He and his two brothers, Bill and Abe, were the famous hockey “Chin Line” in southern Ontario, enjoying much success in amateur hockey. When George was 15, he and his brothers were invited to the Toronto Maple Leafs training camp. He was granted a hockey scholarship at the University of Michigan, where he obtained his degree in geology. He was selected an NCAA All-American for two years, and his team won the NCAA hockey championships in both of those years. He was inducted into the University of Michigan Hockey Hall of Fame in 1977. George moved west to work as a geologist and met Coral. They raised their family in Calgary. For George, family was his priority and, consequently, he was adored by all his children and grandchildren. They admired his friendliness, hard work, humour, discipline, servant-heartedness and generosity. His interests included fitness (he was jogging decades before it was common place and worked out the day before he died), ballroom dancing, golfing, skating, gardening, travelling to dozens of countries with Coral, and watching sports. One of George’s favourite verses was 2 Timothy 4:7, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race and I have kept the faith.” A Celebration of Life will be held in the new year.
