Mary Jean Large of Tiverton died, with family by her side, Sunday, Dec. 31, 2023, at the South Bruce Grey Health Centre, Kincardine, at the age of 86. Beloved wife of George Large. Mary Jean is survived by her children, Barbara Leggett, Bert Haist (Kathy Johnston) and Steve Large. Grandma of Jenny Cook, Suzanna Cook, Joseph Haist (Jasmine), Conner Haist, Kassandra Ball (Matt), Katelyn Reynolds (Jamie), and Kaleb Large (Madison Ashton); and her great-grandchildren, Everly Ball, Colten Ball, Tessa Reynolds and Willow Hawley. Fondly remembered by her brother, Donald Leggett; and extended family and friends. Predeceased by her parents, Herbert and Gladys Leggett; daughter, Bonnie Large; and sisters, Helen Hemstock and Sharon McCormick. Mary Jean spent much of her life behind the wheel of a vehicle. She loved to drive. She drove a school bus and volunteered her skills for cancer patients, Children’s Aid and assisting the Amish. Even her great love for farming provided her with the opportunity to drive. She would always be found driving tractors, trucks, or the side-by-side pulling wagons during hay season. Mary Jean also deeply cared for animals, especially horses. She was a great horsewoman and was known in the community for her contribution to 4-H equestrian clubs where she mentored youth and taught the art of horsemanship. Family will receive friends at the Davey-Linklater Funeral Home, 757 Princes Street, Kincardine, Friday, Jan. 5, 2024, from 12:30 p.m. until the time of the funeral at 1:30 p.m., with Pastor Kenneth Craig officiating. Reception to follow. Spring interment, Port Bruce Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary Jean’s memory to the Kincardine and Community Health Care Foundation, Canadian Cancer Society or Alzheimer Society of Grey-Bruce, would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy.
