Phyllis Luella Metcalf (née McConnell) of Cargill, died at the South Bruce Grey Health Centre, Kincardine, Friday, March 8, 2024, at the age of 99. Beloved wife of the late Willard Metcalf (2003). Survived by her children, Eric Metcalf (Candy Keller-Metcalf) of Cargill, and Cheryl Swirklis (the late Michael, 2021) of Holyrood. Missed by her grandchildren, Tyler (Diane), Corey (Samantha), Logan (Ariel), Angela, Kristen (Kyle), Justin (Natasha), Marcella, and Maxwell; and great-grandchildren, Coraline, Owen, Vincent, Jovi, Elysia, Mavis and Finnick. Fondly remembered by her sisters and brothers, Glen, Audrey, Mel (Elaine), Kathaleen (Bob), Annetta (Ted), Sharon and Norval; and sisters-in-law, Norma and Janet. Also remembered by many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her parents, Mary (nee Kerr) and Russell McConnell; brothers, Eric, Orland (Jan), Calvin, Karl (Dorothy), Wray and Elwyn (Eleanor); sister, Margaret; sisters in-law, Isabel and Isabell; and brother-in-law, Harold. Phyllis was the eldest in a family of 15 children. This brought responsibility and along with that, the joy of being part of a large family. Christmas dinners meant a houseful of people, food and laughter. When Phyllis was a young woman, she spent some time in Toronto as nanny/housekeeper but her heart was country and eventually, she took on the role of wife and mother, helping on the farm and raising her family. Phyllis was a hard worker; she loved to sew and take care of her garden. Her garden brought great joy and bounty; I am told she made “the best sweet pickles in the world.” Phyllis was an important part of her family and her community; she will be remembered by a large extended family, and many neighbours and friends. Family will receive friends at the Davey-Linklater Funeral Home, 757 Princes Street, Kincardine, Wednesday, March 13, 2024, from 4-8 p.m., where the funeral will be held Thursday, March 14, 2024, at 12 p.m., with Rev. Rob Hiscox officiating. Reception to follow in the Davey-Linklater Lounge. Spring interment, Purdy Cemetery. Memorial donations to the Kincardine and Community Health Care Foundation or Alzheimer Society of Grey-Bruce, would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy.
