Declan John Whelan of Kincardine, died peacefully, with loved ones at his side, at the South Bruce Grey Health Centre, Kincardine, Thursday, Dec. 27, 2019, at the age of 85. Cherished husband of Pauline Whelan. Beloved father of Paul (Susan), Declan (Sharyn), Marina (Eugene), Angela (Fred) and Niall (Anna); and uncle of Patrick (Nancy) Whelan and John Whelan. Dear grandfather of Taylor, Rebecca, Sinead, Kyla, Colin, Conor, Shannon, Ryan, Adam, Claire, Mairead, Sean, Stephanie, Jonathan and Jack; and great-grandfather of Akeira, Owen and Nathan. Predeceased by his parents, Patrick and Norah (née McDowell); and brothers, Brendan (Maureen) and Patrick (Marie). Declan was an outstanding engineer who was passionate about his field of nuclear safety and was recognized by his peers for outstanding contributions. He was a gifted raconteur with a nearly endless supply of stories about his childhood in Ireland and his many adventures from his storied career. His interests were wide-ranging, including etymology, history, literature and the Irish language. With Pauline, he co-authored a novel featuring Viking Dublin, which combined many of these interests. Above all, he will be remembered for his loving wit, tempered with a sly smile and a mischievous sparkle in his eyes. Visitation will take place at the Davey-Linklater Funeral Home, Kincardine, Sunday, Dec. 29, 2019, from 2-4 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church, Kincardine, Monday, Dec. 30, 2019, at 11 a.m., with Father Thomas Manninezhath as celebrant. A reception at the SureStay Plus Hotel in Kincardine will follow the mass, from Noon to 3 p.m. Interment, Kincardine Cemetery. Memorial donations to cancer research or to a cause of your choice, are welcomed.
