JEAN PATTERSON

February 20, 2020

Jean Patterson of Kincardine died peacefully at Trillium Court Seniors' Community, Feb. 20, 2020, while being serenaded one final time with “You Are My Sunshine” on harmonica by her husband of nearly 70 years, Les Patterson. With family by her side, Jean heard her beloved granddaughter, Victoria, say “I love you and will see you again in the afterlife as a butterfly.” As a young woman, Jean had to learn how to sew her own clothes and look after the necessities of life. She was a beautiful, intelligent, independent person with a caring soul. Her appearance was always important – she loved to dress nicely with her favourite jewellery, stylish hairdo, and lovely outfits. Jean loved to knit, rug-hook, bowl, keep up on current events, and follow her favourite Toronto Maple Leafs, Raptors, and Blue Jays. She even learned how to swim as an older adult, in a group called Scared Skinnies, surprising Les in the pool! At the age of 20, Les, just returning to work after being a sergeant in the 48th Highlanders, walked into Old City Hall in Toronto and saw Jean working as an office girl at age 16. Upon first glance, he knew she was the one he was going to marry. From that point on, Jean became a permanent fixture in the Harrison and Patterson families. Many happy family get-togethers took place in Peterborough and Fenelon Falls, Ontario; with Chemong Lake and Cameron Lake being favourite destinations at family cottages. Jean was extremely proud of her family: Judy, Dave, and Victoria Lockhart, Jim and Mary Patterson, and Janet and Dave Browne. She encouraged them and supported them in their love of music, always attending concerts and events with Les. She enjoyed sharing family time on Buckhorn Lake at Scotsman Point and The Birches, with cherished family dogs, Kelly and Paddy, in tow. Kincardine became her second home while visiting her two daughters who live there. Beautiful sunsets, concerts by the beach, Saturday night pipe band parades – were all cherished by Jean. She and Les enjoyed travelling together, venturing on many cruises and visiting several beautiful places in Canada, including Tofino, British Columbia, where her son, Jim and his wife, Mary. settled in retirement. Les’ sister, Bev Gibson, her son, David, and daughter, Florence, along with their families, were always a supportive and important part of Jean’s life. Jean’s family thanks the staff at Trillium Court for their compassion and support over the past four years, especially the lodge caregivers, close friends for being there with a shoulder to lean on, and Dr. Gary Gurbin for going above and beyond with Jean’s care. A Celebration of Life will be held at Trillium Court, Kincardine, Saturday, March 7, 2020, from 2-4 p.m. Donations may be made in Jean’s name to the Kincardine Community Concert Band or the Kincardine Scottish Pipe Band.
