James “Elmer” Courtney of Ripley died Jan. 13, 2016, at the Kincardine Hospital, in his 89th year. He was the beloved husband of Joyce (Elliott) for more than 65 years. Elmer was the only child born Dec. 18, 1927, to Mary (MacLennan) and Harold Courtney, in Kincardine. Dear father of Lynn and Freda of RR 2, Ripley; Gail and Brian Johnson of Kincardine; Carmon and Bernice of RR 2, Ripley; and Joan and Mike Petersen of Edmonton, Alberta. Survived by his daughter-in-law, Carol; and his son-in-law, Rodger Ludwig. Missed by his 24 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Predeceased by his son, Elliott (2010); and his daughter, Ann Ludwig (2013). Over the years, Elmer farmed and ran a farm machinery business in the area. He enjoyed many hours coaching minor sports and later being a spectator. Visitation will be held Sunday, Jan. 17, from 1-2 p.m., at St. Andrew's United Church in Ripley, followed by the funeral at 2 p.m. Interment, Ripley Cemetery.
