Alvin Richard Irwin of Newmarket, formerly of Lucknow, died May 3, 2020, at Southlake Regional Health Centre. He was 85. Born Sept. 5, 1934, he was the son of Emerson and Rachel Irwin of Lucknow. Survived by his loving wife, Mary Irwin (nee Alton); children, Warren, Darryl and Karen (Jim Sendall), and grandchildren, Lindsay, Kate, Stephanie, Rachelle, Justin, Jason, Matthew and Blake. Also survived by his brother, Ellwood (Joan) Irwin; and his sister, Shirley (Michael) DeNeire. Predeceased by his parents; and siblings, Margaret, Robert, Elaine, Wilda, Maxine, Donnabelle and Barry. Al spent the majority of his career with Imperial Oil, retiring in 1990. He began his career as a truck driver and worked his way up through the organization to management positions of increasing responsibility across Canada. After his retirement from Imperial, he worked an additional 26 years with Ultramar Canada and the Highlands GM dealership in Aurora. Al had a great sense of humour. He was always ready to tell a joke or share a funny story. Throughout his life, he enjoyed playing and watching hockey, playing cards, and he continued to excel at pool well into his 80s. Over the past decade, he spent the winter months in Arizona, making many friends and lasting memories. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and sharing family time in the summer and Christmas at the family’s ranch in British Columbia. Al will be sadly missed by his family and friends in Canada and the United States. A celebration of Al’s life will be held with family and friends at a later date.
