Margaret “Peggy” Elizabeth MacCharles (nee Bowers) of Ripley, beloved wife of the late Alexander “Sandy” MacCharles (2004), died Tuesday Oct. 12, 2021, in Kincardine hospital, just a month before her 99th birthday. Born Nov. 20, 1922, in Huron Township, she was the daughter of the late Kate and Shirl Bowers. Dear mother of Pat (Paul) Downing and Mary (Steve) Donaldson. Cherished by her grandchildren, Meaghan (Jason) Higgins, Cory Downing, Curt (Janine) Donaldson and Mike (Carley) Donaldson; and great-grandchildren, Ethan, Bain, Kale and Reid Higgins and Paige, Brandt, Blake and Myer Donaldson. Much loved by her many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and -nephews. Predeceased by daughter, Laurie MacCharles; grandson, Scott Donaldson; siblings, Annie (Watt) Culbert, Hetty (George) McLeod and Jack (Betty) Bowers; and in-laws, Marie Darrah, Isabel Gaunt, Sadie Knott, John MacCharles, Jessie Avery, Donalda Slater, Rod MacCharles and Margaret Taylor, and their spouses. Peggy was a long-time and well-respected teacher. She joined the South Bruce branch of the Retired Women Teachers of Ontario (RWTO) and was recognized in 2017 as one of only two members who were over the age of 90. A private celebration of Peggy’s life will be held at the MacKenzie and McCreath Funeral Home, Ripley, with interment to follow at the Ripley Cemetery.
