David Lorne Schmalz of Kincardine, died peacefully at Guelph General Hospital, Sunday, May 22, 2022, at the age of 80. Beloved father of Christian Schmalz of Windsor. Brother of Linda Chenoweth (Craig). Predeceased by his parents, Lorne and Rita (née Lauber) Schmalz; and many nieces and nephews. The Schmalz family moved to Walkerton in September of 1939, where they took over “The Hartley House.” Dave worked as a kid and returned after earning a degree at Michigan State University and worked at the Hartley House another 20 years. The Michigan State spirit was a part of who he was, especially when the Spartans beat Michigan or Ohio State. He always said that if cut, he would bleed green-and-white. In 1993, Dave’s adventures led him into the financial and life insurance industries, where he learned the ropes at Met Life, Mutual Life and the Hepcoe Credit Union, before venturing out on his own. These years were a great source of joy for him. His lifelong commitment to AA was one of his greatest accomplishments and he helped numerous others during these times. He loved music, enjoyed singing and playing his trombone, and was a member of the Howlin’ Dog Vintage Jazz Band in Kincardine for many years. A music-man until the end, Dave will be greatly missed by many incredible people who brightened his days, especially visits with his son, Christian. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church, Kincardine, Thursday, June 9, 2022 at 11 a.m. Reception to follow at the SureStay Plus Hotel by Best Western, Kincardine. Memorial donations to Alcoholics Anonymous – Central West, the Lung Association or the Grey-Bruce Animal Shelter, would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy. |
