JOHN "MURRAY" THOMPSON

John “Murray” Thompson of Huron Township died peacefully, Dec. 2, 2022, at Huron Shores Hospice in Tiverton, in his 78th year. Predeceased by his loving wife, Janette Alma (nee Lowry). Loving father of Kenneth (Lorie), Janine (Don), Adrienne (Tony), and Keith (Julie), all of the Pine River area. Most wonderful grandfather of Drew, Kody, Jami, Morgan, Ethan, Lauren, Rachel, Sadie, Reid, Rhys, and Kelsey. Survived by his sister, Marilyn (Ron Farrell) of Walkerton. Murray will be sadly missed by his in-laws David, Shirley, Lynn, Donna, Wayne, Patt, Carl, Ellen, Elliott, Cori, and Gene. Predeceased by Perrin and Marion Lowry, Elmer and Marlene MacKenzie, and Gayle Lowry. Greatly missed by many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbours. Murray was the son of Ernie and Mildred Thompson, and lived his whole life in Huron Township. He and Janette were married for 55 years and raised four wonderful children, Kenneth, Janine, Adrienne and Keith. He farmed his entire life, working alongside his father for many years, and later his sons and grandsons. He was the fifth generation on the Thompson homestead. Murray had a lot of drive, was in a hurry to get “it” done, and never really retired. When he and Janette moved to Lurgan Beach, he returned to the farm multiple times daily to be put to work, or see what was going on. He combined the fall harvest of 2022, and requested multiple trips by the farm on the way to his most recent appointments just to see what was going on. We’ll make one last trip past the farm, Dec. 6. Murray was a valued, life-long member of Pine River United Church, serving on many committees over the years. When asked to help, he did so with dedication. He coached minor hockey in Ripley, and lots of people will remember a quick trip to the rink with Murray. He served on Huron Township council for 16 years, first as a councillor and then reeve. He was an avid reader, polishing off many a book in a day or two. Murray and Janette loved to travel, and saw many lovely destinations, but he especially loved their time together in Florida where they met many friends year after year. He was on the Ontario Wheat Board, where he also made many life-long friends. Murray had a generous and welcoming personality. He was humble, and kind. Many describe him as a true gentleman, and he remained that way in his final days. Pine River will never be quite the same after this past week, and the dust will settle on the 6th Concession. Visitation will be held Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2022, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Pine River United Church, followed by the funeral at 1:30 p.m. Interment, Ripley Cemetery.
