Leslie (Les) Hallam of Kincardine, died at Huron Shores Hospice, Tiverton, Feb. 9, 2023, at the age of 78, after a brief fight with cancer. He was born May 5, 1944, in Tarbock, Liverpool, England. Survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Pamela; daughters, Clare of Windsor and Stephanie (Chris) Kincardine; and son, Rod (Veronica) of Rockwood. Proud grandpa and Poppa of nine grandchildren, Michael (Megan), Meghan, Alex, Julia, Melody, Thomas, Greg, Declan and Pippa. Also survived by siblings, Anne Martin of England and Keith Crosby of New Zealand. Together for almost 60 years, Les and Pam travelled worldwide. He was always one for learning new things and had a keen sense of adventure. This led to exciting careers in Cyprus and Freeport Grand Bahamas before emigrating to Canada in 1977. They first went to Deep River, and then settled in Kincardine where he worked as a nuclear operator at Ontario Hydro/Bruce Power until he retired in 2009. Les was a member of the Masonic Lodge for many years, and volunteered for many local organizations. He was a voracious reader and encouraged all who knew him to pick up a book and learn something new. As a member of the Book Club, he was often found at the library, looking for new authors, ideas, and was always up for a good discussion. Through reading, he developed many interests, and was a member of the Library Board, helping to ensure the extension was built. Les loved his art and had a passion for painting. His artwork won awards and was displayed at local art galleries. Whether it was fishing in Lake Huron, hunting in the fall, building a boat, snorkelling, crocheting new designs, painting, or trying his hand at animal husbandry or raising champion miniature schnauzers with Pam, Les was always up for a challenge or a good conversation. After his retirement, he and Pam enjoyed cruises and bird-watching. Les enjoyed nature and was always excited when he found a new bird at the feeder. He loved growing trees from seeds and transplanting them in better spots, looking for sunnier spaces for them to grow. He had a love of knowledge and shared many of his skills with his grandchildren, teaching them math and how to fish, crochet and paint. A special thank you to everyone involved with his care. First, at London Health Sciences Centre, Kincardine hospital, then at home with Carepartners and wife Pam keeping him comfortable, and finally, at Huron Shores Hospice, Tiverton. The family extends a huge thank you to all the volunteers, the staff, and especially Dr. Ward, who helped us so much along the way. Your kindness touched us all during this difficult journey. Following his wishes, Les' body has been donated for science and research. Cremation will follow and private arrangements have been entrusted to the MacKenzie and McCreath Funeral Home, Ripley. Memorial donations to Huron Shores Hospice in Tiverton, would be greatly appreciated by the family. A celebration of life will take place in the spring.
