RACING DRIVER NEARLY CAUSES HEAD-ON COLLISION
(BLUEWATER, ON) – A 47-year-old driver of Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh has been charged with Racing, following almost causing a head-on collision Monday afternoon, July 13, south of Bayfield.
Just before 2:30 p.m., a Huron County OPP officer observed the driver of a Ford F-150 pick-up truck travelling northbound on Bluewater Veterans Highway near Blue Bluff Road at a high rate of speed.
The officer, travelling in the same direction as the Ford, watched as the vehicle entered into the oncoming lane to pass a string of three vehicles. The truck accelerated to a speed of 132 km/h in a posted 80 km/h zone to complete the pass of the vehicles. The dangerous pass forced a southbound vehicle into taking evasive action in order to avoid a head-on collision. The speed of the truck was measured by a RADAR device.
Richard IRELAND, 47, of Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh has been charged with Race a Motor Vehicle. His licence has been suspended for seven days and his pick-up truck has been impounded for the week. He has a court appearance scheduled for Sept. 1, at Provincial Offences Act Court in Goderich.
POT BURNING ON STOVE LEADS TO “POT” SEIZURE
(GODERICH, ON) – A Goderich resident managed to escape injury after emergency crews responded to a Newgate Street residence, July 11.
At approximately 12:18 a.m., Huron County OPP, Huron EMS and the Goderich Fire Department responded to the two-storey home after receiving an emergency call for assistance. The caller reported to police there was a man inside the residence who appeared to be sleeping on a living room sofa and he could hear a smoke alarm sounding off inside the residence.
Huron OPP officers arrived on scene and observed smoke starting to fill up the kitchen. The smoke was coming from a burning pot that was left unattended on the stove element. Officers tried to get the man’s attention from outside the residence, but he did not move from the sofa. Fearing for the man’s safety, officers forced entry into the home and were able to wake the man from his deep sleep. The element was shut off prior to catching fire and the man was checked over by EMS.
Although the man escaped injury, his good fortune turned when officers spotted in plain view, a quantity of marijuana lying on the nearby coffee table. As a result, 47-year-old Peter ROBINSON of Goderich has been charged with Possession of a Schedule II Substance – Cannabis Marijuana. He has a scheduled court appearance set for Aug. 24, at the Ontario Court of Justice – Goderich.
WANTED MAN ARRESTED AFTER FOOT CHASE
(GODERICH, ON) – A Goderich resident is now facing nine criminal charges after he tried to flee from police early Tuesday morning.
Just after 8 a.m., a Huron County OPP officer was patrolling on Maitland Road, when he observed a man trying to kick-start his dirt bike. Upon approaching the dirt bike, the officer noted it did not have an attached licence plate. Also, while speaking with the man, the officer determined he had a valid warrant out for his arrest.
When the officer informed the man he was being placed under arrest, he started to walk away from the officer. The officer instructed him to stay put, but he then took off running from the officer. The officer chased the man a short distance and just as the officer closed in, the fleeing man took his motorcycle helmet and swung it at the officer. The officer was able to dodge the helmet and grab onto the man. The man further resisted arrest; however, the officer was able to gain control of the man and take him into custody.
Upon searching the man, the investigating officer found he was in possession of suspected methamphetamine and marijuana. In addition, he was carrying a “flick” knife and a BB gun. Further investigation revealed the man was currently bound by several court-imposed conditions of release.
As a result, 23-year-old Tyler MILLION of Goderich has been charged with the following offences:
He remained in custody until a video court appearance at the Ontario Court of Justice – Goderich July 14.
