Goderich Hometown Heroes charity hockey game adds locals, celebrities to roster

With less than a week to go until the second annual Hometown Heroes "Raise a Little Health" charity hockey game in Goderich, several local hockey standouts and celebrity players have been added to the roster.

The locals include:

  • Joey Hishon, a Stratford native, played 13 games with the Colorado Avalanche last year. He also played for the Owen Sound Attack and led the team in scoring in 2009.
  • Garrett Meurs, a Ripley native, is currently playing for the Fort Wayne Komets in the ECHL. He was drafted by the Colorado Avalanche in the 2011 NHL entry draft.
  • Bobby Raymond, a native of Lucknow, currently plays for the Adler Mannheim of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL). He was AHL Champion with the Binghamton Senators in 2011 and ECHL Champion with the Florida Everblades 2012.
  • Jeremy Welsh, a Bayfield native, scored 20 goals for the Chicago Wolves last year in the AHL while under contract with the St. Louis Blues. He previously played for Carolina Hurricanes and the Vancouver Canucks.
  • Brad Aitken is a resident of Central Huron. He played for the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Edmonton Oilers. He also played in the IHL and the AHL including a brief stint overseas.


Celebrity players include:

  • Liam Maaskant, Captain of the Kitchener Rangers, of Goderich Township.
  • Kenny Huether, Memorial Cup winner with the Oshawa Generals.
  • Ray Huether, Centre for the North Bay Battalion in the OHL.
  • Nick Spaling, the newest member of the Toronto Maple Leafs, of Drayton, Ontario.
  • Brandon DeFazio, teammate of Cal O'Reilly and Calder Cup Finalist with the Utica Comets. Brandon also played his first NHL game this year with the Vancouver Canucks.


The Hometown Heroes game will take place at the Maitland Recreation Centre in Goderich Thursday, July 23. The Goderich Lions Club will also be putting on a pre-game barbecue outside the YMCA, starting at 5 p.m. Everyone is welcome!

Tickets are $10 each for adults and $5 each for children. They can be purchased at Huron-Bruce MP Ben Lobb's office in Goderich or Port Elgin. Tickets are also available at the Gateway Centre of Excellence in Rural Health in Seaforth, the Alexandra Marine and General Hospital Gift Shop, and the Goderich-Huron YMCA or by contacting Gwen Devereaux at 519-524-8689, Ext. 5724.

Last year's game was sold out, raising more than $40,000.

Lobb is co-ordinating the event with proceeds from the game going to the Alexandra Marine and General Hospital in Goderich, the Gateway Centre of Excellence in Rural Health in Seaforth and the Goderich-Huron YMCA.
