Sunny, warm weather draws huge crowd to garden tour

Sunday, July 12, was warm and sunny – the perfect weather for a tour of several gardens in the Kincardine area.

Almost 200 people agreed, as they took in the annual “Through the Garden Gate” garden tour, hosted by the Kincardine and District Horticultural Society.

Organizers were thrilled with the weather and the turn-out, calling it a great success. Last year, a total of 166 tickets was sold. However, the Kincardine Scottish Festival was on the same weekend.

There were 10 gardens on the tour.

Betty Conlin, on Manorwood Crescent, welcomed people to her backyard with its pondless waterfall, fairies, mermaids, birds, and sculptures – a truly enchanted garden.

Duncan and Sandy Elston on MacDonald Avenue just moved to this property a year ago and have already cleared away extensive debris to create a beautiful backyard, and a “veggie bed” in the front yard.

Wayne and Mary Ellen Ross on Russell Street have a magnificent front yard garden, complete with a black lace elderberry bush, and a peaceful retreat in the backyard.

Paul and Heather West on Goderich Street have a gorgeous flower bed in front, and wonderful backyard gardens, with continuous colour and change.

Rowe Deans' property, also on Goderich Street, has a marvellous lakeview, a beautiful terraced front yard flower bed, with a winding stairway between rock gardens, bordered with two ponds. The backyard has a stream, natural vegetation, bush and great privacy.

Also on the tour, were Brigitte Bellstedt's garden on Golf Links Road, Richard and Mary Lehman's garden on Nelson Street East, Derek and Dianne Griffiths' garden on Harbour Street, John and Lorraine Borysewicz garden on Lynden Crescent, and the Walker House garden, the Kincardine Lighthouse garden, and the Flag Pole garden.
