Drivers don't heed the sober driving message in Huron County

(HURON COUNTY, ON) – Huron County OPP officers were busy patrolling county roads during the Civic Day Long Weekend traffic initiative which ran from July 31 to Aug. 3. As part of this past weekend’s patrols, traffic education, and   Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) programs, the following enforcement numbers were generated:
 

  • 105 Speeding charges were issued
  • 5 Seatbelt charges
  • 4 Distracted driving charges
  • 5 Moving violations
  • 18 Other Highway Traffic Act charges
  • 11 Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act charges
  • 9 Liquor Licence Act charges
  • 1 Marine offence
  • 5 Other Provincial Statutes charges
  • 1 Drug offence charge
  • 3 Other Criminal code driving charges
  • 2 Warn Range Suspensions (Blood alcohol from .05 to .08 per cent)


Officers also charged the following drivers with offences related to the operation of motor vehicles and the consumption of alcohol.
 

(MUNICIPALITY OF BLUEWATER, ON) - Friday, July 31, shortly after 6 p.m., in response to a traffic complaint on London Road, a Huron County OPP officer stopped a vehicle that was observed swerving in its lane. The female driver displayed signs of impairment and was transported to the Exeter OPP detachment where she failed to provide breath samples. The female was also found to be in possession of Marijuana, an open container of liquor, and unmarked cigarettes.
 

55-year-old Jean-Anne DUBE of Toronto has been charged with, “driving while ability impaired” and “fail or refuse to provide sample”, contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.  She was also charged with “possession of a schedule II substance, cannabis marijuana under 30 grams”, contrary to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. She faces additional charges of “driving motor vehicle with open container of liquor”, contrary to the Liquor Licence Act of Ontario, and “possess unmarked fine cut tobacco”, contrary to the Tobacco Tax Act.  She is to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Exeter, Aug. 27, to answer to these charges.
 

(ASHFIELD-COLBORNE-WAWANOSH, ON) – At approximately 11 p.m., Friday July 31, a Huron County OPP officer on patrol stopped a slow-moving vehicle. The driver failed a roadside breath test and failed subsequent Intoxilyzer breath tests at the Huron OPP detachment. 
 

33-year-old Brian HORWATH of Hamilton has been charged with “driving with more than 80 mgs of alcohol in blood”, contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.  He is to attend at the Ontario Court of Justice in Goderich, Aug. 24, to answer to this charge.
 

(MUNICIPALITY OF SOUTH HURON, ON) – Saturday, Aug. 1, around 1:30 a.m., Huron County OPP officers were conducting a RIDE program at Bluewater Highway and Indian Rd. A vehicle was observed turning into a driveway and down a sideroad, in a suspected attempt to avoid the RIDE program. The vehicle was stopped by police and the driver failed a roadside breath test. The driver was taken to the Huron OPP detachment where he failed two Intoxilyzer breath tests.
 

21-year-old Cole James FLETT of Huron-Kinloss Township has been charged with “driving with more than 80 mgs of alcohol in blood”, contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.  He is to attend at the Ontario Court of Justice in Exeter, Aug. 27, to answer to this charge.
 

(ASHFIELD-COLBORNE-WAWANOSH TWP, ON) – Saturday, Aug. 1, shortly before 11 p.m., a Huron County OPP officer stopped a vehicle on Lucknow Line at Hawkins Rd. The driver of the vehicle was found to have been drinking. He was taken to the Huron County OPP detachment where he failed two Intoxilyzer breath tests.
 

30-year-old Jeffrey Richard GRAVEL of Huron-Kinloss Township has been charged with “driving with more than 80 mgs of alcohol in blood”, contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada. He is to attend at the Ontario Court of Justice in Goderich, Sept. 21, to answer to this charge.
 

(SOUTH HURON TWP, ON) – Sunday, Aug. 2, shortly after midnight while Huron County OPP officers were conducting a RIDE program at the intersection of the Main Street in Dashwood and Bronson Line, a car was stopped. The driver was administered a roadside breath test which he failed. The driver was transported to the Exeter OPP detachment where he failed to provide breath samples.
 

29-year-old James Nile SMITH of Windsor has been charged with “fail or refuse to provide sample”, contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.  He also faces Liquor Licence Act charges for “driving motor vehicle with open container of liquor”, and for “driving motor vehicle with liquor readily available”.  He was also charged with “drive motor vehicle – no licence”, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario. He is to attend at the Ontario Court of Justice in Goderich, Aug. 24, to answer to these charges.
 

***These drivers all received an automatic 90-day driver’s licence suspension and their motor vehicles have been impounded for seven days.
 

“Huron County OPP officers worked hard to try and make Huron roads as safe as possible; however, motorists need to do their part," says staff sergeant Shawn Johnson, Huron County OPP, "whether that means deciding not to drive after having consumed that drink, avoiding distractions when driving, abiding by speed limits, wearing that seatbelt, or just obeying the rules of the road. If we all take the responsibility for driving seriously, it will go a long way in avoiding tragic deaths.”
