Marley Martyn crowned new Ripley-Huron Fall Fair ambassador
Marley Martyn is the 2015-16 Ripley-Huron Fall Fair ambassador, after receiving the crown and sash from last year's ambassador Meghan Johnson at the fair Friday night at the Ripley-Huron Community Centre.

Joining her onstage for some fun and trivia competition, were her fellow contestants from the Ripley Reunion, Gregory Reid and Kirsten Walden.

Ripley Agricultural Society president Brian Reid welcomed everyone home to the fair and urged all to enjoy the many great events planned for the weekend. He thanked last year's ambassador for her hard work and dedication, and congratulated the new ambassador.

MC Wes Elmes conducted the Prince and Princess pageant, with six contestants who answered a variety of questions about objects drawn from a container. This year's Prince and Princess are William Falconer and Madison Chilton.

Maggie Durnin, a Grade 8 student at Brookside Public School, brought some wonderful talent to the stage, as she sang and played guitar for the crowd. She has been playing guitar since she was eight years old.

The ambassador contestants played a game of trivia, answering questions about the fair, and then built a house ("Welcome Home" theme of the fair) out of Play-Doh. Kirsten won the house-building, while Gregory won the overall points for the trivia game.

Auctioneers Rob Thompson and Johnny Murray took over, drawing bids from the crowd as they auctioned off the prize-winning pies and cakes at the fair. They raised $2,575 which will be used to send the Grade 7 class at Ripley-Huron Community School to the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto next year.

Sharon Martin, homecraft president, thanked Meghan for doing such a great job as ambassador over the past year.

Meghan then spoke about her time as ambassador, noting that a year ago, she was very nervous but managed to help auction off pies and cakes without dropping them.

"Being ambassador is an incredible learning opportunity," she said. "You gain confidence and you make so many great memories. Each event is unforgettable - riding in a limousine, eating schnitzel, competing at the Miss Midwest competition, and going to the CNE and competing against 74 other ambassadors."

She thanked the agricultural society and everyone who helped make her year such a success. "I know Marley will do a fantastic job. Appreciate every moment because before you know it, the year will be over. Also, Marley, Happy 18th Birthday! To everyone, enjoy the fair!"

Marley said she is excited for the next year and encouraged everyone to enjoy a happy and safe Ripley Fall Fair.

Also Friday night, participants tried the new events, with gusto: the egg-tossing, human tractor pull, and animal-calling. There were lots of frogs at the frog-jumping contest, plenty of youngsters at the pedal tractor pull, and lots of noise at the garden tractor pull.

The fair continued Saturday with the parade, animal shows, and much more.
