Brooklyn Lampi and her friend, Maya Hunter, are passionate about helping others.
The two 12-year-old Kincardine girls are part of the Social Justice Club at St. Anthony's School, Kincardine, and have been raising money for others in many ways since they were very young.
Next year, they have the opportunity to attend a Me to We Youth Volunteer Leadership Trip and Camp. Brooklyn is heading to Ecuador in June for two weeks, and Maya will be attending a week-long camp outside of Toronto.
Highlights of the volunteer and leadership trips include: leadership training, service learning, educational seminars and volunteering at local schools and community centres, and making a difference in people's lives.
The volunteering opportunities include: school-building or working on a Free the Children development such as a clean water project or alternative income program, teaching in the classroom, and interaction with community members in rural communities.
Both trips focus on bringing back what you've learned to your own communities.
The girls are holding a Neon Night Run to fund-raise for their trips. The event is slated for Saturday, Oct. 3, with one-kilometre and five-kilometre races beginning at 7:30 p.m., at Victoria Park, Kincardine. The one-kilometre route is a Fun Run down Main Street, at a cost of $10 per participant, while the five-kilometre is a Poker Run (collect five cards on the route, and the best hand wins a prize), at a cost of $15 per participant.
You can pre-register by E-mailing: KincardineNeonNightRun@gmail.com. Last-minute registration, on the night of the run, will be accepted from 5:30-7 p.m. at Victoria Park. Get your glow on!
