(GODERICH, ON) – An 18-year-old Goderich resident is facing six criminal charges following his arrest Monday, Oct. 5.
Huron County OPP, with help from the Huron OPP Crime Unit and OPP Forensic Identification Services, investigated a series of deliberately-set small fires that took place this past weekend in the Town of Goderich.
At approximately 1:30 a.m., Oct. 2, the Huron OPP and Goderich Fire Department responded to a fire that caused minor damage to some trees and shrubs at the end of Cove Road.
Oct. 3, at approximately 3 a.m., police were called to Cove Road to investigate a complaint and upon arrival, located a small grass fire. Officers were able to put out the fire.
Early the next morning, Oct. 4, police and Goderich firefighters responded to another call at Cove Road. Two garbage bags had been set on fire.
Later that day just after 4 p.m., Huron OPP officers attended a restaurant in Goderich after a small fire was discovered by staff inside the restaurant. The fire was extinguished by restaurant staff.
Through the course of the investigation, officers were also able to determine the suspect was responsible for stealing a quantity of cash from the same restaurant.
As well, officers determined he was responsible for calling police Sept. 27 and making a false report. He reported he had been stopped on Bluewater Veterans Highway by someone impersonating a police officer. This proved to be a hoax.
As a result, 18-year-old Casey HUFF of Goderich has been charged with four counts of Arson, Public Mischief and Theft Under $5,000.
He was released from custody with a court appearance scheduled for Nov. 9, at the Ontario Court of Justice – Goderich.
