Ripley Wolves edge Lucknow Lancers in season home opener Saturday night

The Ripley Wolves opened their 2015-16 season with a spirited 3-2 win over the Lucknow Lancers, Saturday night at the Ripley Arena.

The new-look Wolves embarked on their first season in a decade without offensive leaders Travis VanGaver, Mark Stanley and Nick Locking, who all retired this off-season. That didn’t stop the Wolves from playing a sound all-around game and scoring all their goals at even strength, while only being scored upon while shorthanded.

After a scoreless first period, the Wolves fired in a couple of quick goals early in the second to take a 2-0 lead. Jeremy McQuillin scored the first goal, from Tyson Soers and Dustin Catto, and Ryan Dudgeon scored from Cody Britton and Tyler McCarthy.

Lucknow's Scott Miller scored on the powerplay from Ean Moffat and Rick Andrew, before Ripley regained the two-goal lead, on a goal by Britton from Drew Davidson and McCarthy.

The Lancers managed one more goal, a powerplay effort by Chad Simpson from Brett Binning and Chase Chapman, late in the third, but it wasn't enough as Ripley took the 3-2 win.

Rookie goalie Mitch Campbell, who graduated from the Kincardine Junior C Bulldogs last year, stopped 42 shots for the Wolves to get the win in his league debut.

The Wolves hit the road for the next few weeks with games in Shallow Lake and Shelburne, Oct. 16-17; Saugeen Shores Oct. 23 (8:30 p.m.), and Mapleton-Minto (in Drayton) Oct. 30. They return home, Friday, Nov. 6, at 8:30 p.m. against Durham.

The Ripley Wolves are holding their second annual Howling Halloween Dance at the arena, Saturday, Oct. 31, at 9 p.m., featuring The Mudmen. These Scottish rockers blew everyone away last year, and are sure to do the same again this Halloween.

Tickets are $20 each; available at Ripley Variety and the Arena. Prizes for best costume. Call Dwight Irwin at 519-395-0106 for more information.
