Thompson, Hardeman team up with IBC to donate carbon monoxide detectors
Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson and her colleague, Oxford MPP Ernie Hardeman, joined Doug DeRabbie of the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) to put an additional $8,500 worth of carbon monoxide detectors in the homes of Huron-Bruce residents and to raise awareness that these detectors are needed in all homes.
“Carbon Monoxide poisoning is the leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in North America, but many of these tragedies can be prevented by installing a CO detector,” said Hardeman at a presentation in Blyth last month. “It is particularly important in the winter months to ensure your family is protected by making sure vents aren’t blocked and that you have a functioning carbon monoxide detector.”
Thompson explained that residents can reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning by:
- Checking to make sure vents, exhausts and chimneys are clear
- Having fuel-burning appliances serviced regularly
- Getting a carbon monoxide detector and checking it whenever the time changes to ensure it is working
Last year, the Ontario Legislature passed the
Hawkins Gignac Act, a private member's bill introduced by Hardeman, requiring carbon monoxide detectors in Ontario homes and establishing Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week, beginning Nov. 1 each year. The Bill was named after a Woodstock family of four that tragically died after a blocked fireplace exhaust filled the house with carbon monoxide.
“Carbon monoxide is dangerous because you can’t see it, taste it or smell it,” said Thompson. “The only way to ensure you and your family are protected is to reduce the risk of leaks and to get a detector.”
