​Community Matters: Knowledge is power with nuclear

Did you know that Canada is the sixth largest nuclear generating country, producing about four per cent of the world’s nuclear power?

Did you know that Ontario’s nuclear plants generate about 15 per cent of Canada’s electricity, while generating zero carbon emissions?

Did you know that nuclear power accounts for approximately 60 per cent of Ontario’s electricity demand and was crucial in phasing out coal plants and smog days in the province?

Did you know that in doing all of that, Ontario’s nuclear reactors are also producing cancer-fighting medical isotopes to help treat patients and save lives around the world?

The benefits of nuclear power are clear and at Bruce Power, we’re proud to showcase all these facts and more at our visitors’ centre. There is a saying that “Ignorance is bliss,” but the exact opposite is true when it comes to nuclear: “Knowledge is power.”

This summer, bring your family and friends to check out the interesting and interactive exhibits at our visitors’ centre and learn more about the production of nuclear energy, medical isotopes, and our Life-Extension Program and Major Component Replacement (MCR) project, one of the largest clean energy infrastructure projects in Canada.

There’s also an opportunity to participate in our Summer Bus Tour Program, which gives visitors a first-hand peek through the gates of an operating nuclear site after learning about our history and our commitment to safety and the environment. Bus tours run once daily, Monday to Friday, in June, and expand to three tours per day, seven days per week, in July and August. Please note, there are no tours on the statutory holidays of July 1 and Aug. 5.

The public is encouraged to pre-register for the free site bus tours, which kicked off June 3 and run through Aug. 29.

Starting at the Bruce Power Visitors’ Centre, located at 3394 Bruce County Road 20, northwest of Tiverton, guests will have the opportunity to explore the exhibit hall before hopping on a bus for a one-hour narrated tour.

JOIN US FOR FUNFEST IN JULY

Our annual FunFest is scheduled to take place Saturday, July 20, in Kincardine at the Davidson Centre.

This free event features fun for the entire family and includes live entertainment, dog and reptile shows, face-painting, corn dogs, swimming, and more!

The show-stopper will be the fireworks display, lighting up the sky above Kincardine’s Station Beach, beginning at dusk.
