Gym Shorts: Buzzing around like bees

Gym Shorts: Buzzing around like bees
June is the month with the longest daylight hours of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. That spells more great weather on the horizon.

With this warm weather, happy bright yellow and black bumblebees (right) are out buzzing about and so should you.

It’s the time of year when you will see a lot of bumblebees flying into your path. Keep in mind, they are usually harmless wee creatures and unlikely to hurt you. Bumblebees tend to be docile and reluctant to sting. They will sting only if they are threatened, and for the most part, appear to tolerate people.

I read that bumblebees represent hard work, productivity, new beginnings, and the importance of community. So like the bees, now is the time to take advantage of activities outside that will keep you move’n and groove’n. You can enjoy the warmer weather, and also take some time to bask in the sunshine to get your dose of natural Vitamin D. Of course, don’t forget to slather on suntan lotion, wear a hat and carry a bottle of water.

There’s a lot of great sports and other lighter activities available in the great outdoors that will be good for your heart, body and mind. Check out what is available in your community. Here in Kincardine, we have the boundless beaches, pretty parks and trails to travel on.

There are also adults’ and kids’ sports, ranging from tennis and beach volleyball to lawn bowling and minor soccer.

Even walking around in the local art gallery, following the heritage walking tours, or a light walk around town, are great ways to be active. It doesn’t always have to be about speed or strength to help keep your mind and body happy and healthy.

Think about volunteering with one of the many wonderful events taking place outdoors here in Kincardine, such as Cruise Nights, cultural festivals, the Marine Heritage Festival or the Gathering of the Bands.

If you’re out walking downtown or near the pier, you’ll want to stroll by the historic Kincardine Lighthouse (right) during July and August to hear the melodic bagpipes of the Phantom Piper playing at dusk. The Piper plays every night except Saturdays.

Beginning tomorrow (June 22), at 8 p.m., each Saturday night of the summer ends in a musical big bang with the crowd-pleasing sounds of the Kincardine Scottish Pipe Band parade marching through downtown Kincardine. This is followed by a free concert in Victoria Park.

Also, if you happen to be working up a sweat outdoors, don’t be alarmed if you find a bee buzzing real close to you or wanting to land on you. Bees just want to take a lick of the sweet sweat that can attract them. Just remain calm and the bee will realize that you are not a flower and fly on.
