Brianna Pointon-Yungblut is the new Ripley-Huron Fall Fair ambassador, while Maria Morais is the new junior ambassador of the fair.
They were crowned Friday night at the competition held at the Ripley-Huron Community Centre. Also competing for junior ambassador, were Evany Neitzel and Audrey Kernighan.
In addition, the Prince and Princess of the Fair, Brayden VanDyke and Darby Collins, were introduced.
A great crowd gathered for the ambassador pageant, with MC Serena Harris welcoming everyone to the event and the 161st annual fall fair.
James MacDonald, president of the Ripley Agricultural Society, also welcomed everyone, and thanked the volunteers and agricultural society directors for helping put together the fair which is a lot of work.
“Tonight, we’re going to auction off some award-winning pies and cakes, and meet some great young people,” he said. “Take time this weekend to enjoy the 4-H programs, the Super Dog Show, the live music on the main stage and in the refreshment tent. Have a great time at the fair.”
MacDonald also presented an Ontario Association of Agricultural Societies (OAAS) Award of Merit to Shirley Galloway who has been a vital member of the Ripley Agricultural Society through her unwavering dedication and outstanding contributions over the years, particularly with the junior homecraft section.
“She has a remarkable gift for teaching other volunteers about the judging process,” he said. “Her departure from the committee will leave a huge void; she will be greatly missed.”
“Thank you to the agricultural society for recommending me for the award of merit,” said Galloway. “I have enjoyed working with Kathleen Ackert on the junior section. However, organizing the fair is for the younger people, so it’s time for me to retire.”
Following impromptu questions, the junior contestants gave their prepared speeches. The judges then deliberated.
Aera Armstrong provided musical entertainment, followed by the popular auction of the award-winning pies and cakes.
Jonny Murray was the auctioneer, and by the time the dust settled, the auction had brought in more than $4,500 for the agricultural society.
During her farewell speech, Hannah MacDonald said coming to the end of her time as the Ripley-Huron Fall Fair ambassador is bittersweet as she enjoyed the many events and parades she attended. She said the two weeks she spent as CNE Ambassador of the Fairs were the best experience of her life.
“I was so proud to represent our small rural area on the big stage and I’ll have these great memories with me forever,” she said. “Thank you to the agricultural society for a wonderful year. Everything I do in the next year as CNE Ambassador of the Fairs will be for Ripley and the wonderful support I've received from my hometown.”
Junior ambassador Jaclyn Newman also gave a farewell speech, noting she learned that you can never have too many layers when you’re riding in a winter parade.
When the judges returned, Brianna was crowned the new ambassador, and Maria was crowned junior ambassador. Appreciation was given to the ambassador contestant sponsors: FIG Studio Kitchen, Thompson Farms, Everlastings Flowers and Gifts, and Willow and Ren, as well as the many sponsors, volunteers and supporters who made the evening such a success.
Friday night also featured the Kinetic Knights Robotics demonstration, Escape Rooms, the midway, frog-jumping, nail-driving and log-sawing, the FMX show, the Darren Steckle Band, and Graham Bedard.
