Off the Broom: Kincardine team takes win in Oakville
Curling season will soon be here but a team from the Kincardine Curling Club got an early start. Shelley and Doug Dechene, along with Alex and Lesley MacGregor, attended “The Gathering II” at the Oakville Curling Club in late September. They heard about this bonspiel while curling in Scotland last spring. There were 32 teams involved in the three-day tournament: one each from Sweden, Scotland and Switzerland; 15 teams from the United States; and 14 teams from Canada. It was a great time and even better for the team when they walked away winners of the “C” event.
Last week, the Grand Slam of Curling had free live-steaming of all its games. It was great to be able to switch from sheet to sheet to see how each game was going or just choose the one you preferred to watch. As always, later in the week, the games were shown on television. Seriously doubt this will be free in the future.
Our ice is coming along nicely and should be ready for the Oct. 28 start of the season. The Kincardine Curling Club will be hosting an open house, Saturday, Oct. 26, from 1-3 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend - see what the sport is all about if you are a first-time curler, or if you are a refresher and you want to get the kinks out before the season begins. Or, if you prefer, you can try stick-curling which is sort of like shuffleboard. Whatever your choice, clean running shoes are all that is required.
Our Learn to Curl program is an instructional opportunity for new curlers. This is offered only at the beginning of our curling year, and begins Nov. 8, from 7-9 p.m. The first lesson is free, after which you can choose to join to attend the remaining five lessons – what a deal!
