Almost 100 athletes competed in the third annual Ontario Fit Body Boot Camp Games, held Saturday, Sept. 21, at the Davidson Centre soccer field in Kincardine.
Hosted by the Kincardine and Goderich Fit Body Boot Camp, the event welcomed participants from Goderich, Kitchener, Cambridge and Oakville, as well as Kincardine. Athletes ranged in age from in their 20s to mid-80s.
New this year, was the Athletes’ Village, with teams pitching their tents around the soccer field, and adding fancy decorations in hopes of winning prizes for best dressed, best tent design and team spirit.
The event features various rounds of competition. In the morning, there were two contests: cross-country, with athletes running down the field and doing sit-ups in teams; and maxed out, with athletes doing weighted squats and chest presses.
At the games, there are three divisions:
- Fit Body Forever/Functional Fitness – men and women, aged 55-plus. This program is designed to specifically focus on building and improving strength, stamina and stability.
- Goal-Getter Division - open age category, for men and women. In this division, women use 10-pound weights and men use 20-pound weights; for the biathlon event, athletes run 200 metres.
- Fire-Breathing Dragon Category – open age category, for men and women. This is the elite athlete division with the most challenging expectations. Women use 20-pound weights, men use 25-pound weights; and in the biathlon event, athletes run 400 metres.
Two Kincardine teams reached the podium this year.
In the Fit Body Forever division, the Kincardine team of Jim McCreight, Dale Caskenette, Kathy Caskenette and Kim Colling won the gold medal!
And in the Fire Breathing Dragon division, the Kincardine team of Blake Nowell, Hadeel Dardonna, Jaci Vance and Nicole Liddle won bronze!
Each year, the Fit Body Boot Camp Games donates the proceeds from the event to a charitable organization. This year, a $2,000 donation went to Women’s House Serving Bruce and Grey.
