CRIME PREVENTION IS IMPORTANT OVER THE HOLIDAYS

(SOUTHERN BRUCE COUNTY, ON) – The South Bruce OPP wants area residents to make home security a priority over the holidays. Crime prevention is always important, but it needs to be a priority at this time of year. While you are busy shopping for presents, watching school plays, attending office parties or visiting with family and friends, thieves, con-artists and other opportunists are looking for a chance to take cash, credit cards, gifts and other valuables.

The South Bruce OPP is offering the following home security tips:

  • Lock your doors and windows, even if you don’t plan to be away for a long time

  • Make sure you don’t leave gifts or other valuables in plain sight

  • Don’t hide a spare key outside, thieves look for hidden keys

  • If you’re going to be away for an extended period, have a trusted neighbour, friend or family member watch your home

  • Consider a timer; have lights, radio, TV, etc., turn on at random times so your house appears occupied

  • Don’t let newspapers or flyers pile up, and arrange to have your driveway cleared if it snows while you’re away

  • Don’t leave clues on your answering machine, Facebook or other social media to suggest that you are away

  • Consider engraving your property so it’s easier to identify it it’s stolen

Everyone knows the holidays are a busy time of year, but don’t forget that criminals will be out looking for an easy mark.  Taking some simple but effective precautions can help to make your home safe and secure.

The South Bruce OPP is requesting anyone with information that can assist police to call 1-888-310-1122.  Should you wish to remain anonymous, you can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or send a web-tip to crimestop-gb.org, where you may be eligible to receive a cash reward of up to $2,000.
