Flags at half-mast as Kincardine marks Day of Remembrance on Violence Against Women
The Municipality of Kincardine’s flags are flying at half-mast in recognition of the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
Thirty-five years ago, Dec. 6, 1989, 14 young women at l’École Polytechnique de Montréal were murdered because of their gender. They were:
- Geneviève Bergeron
- Hélène Colgan
- Nathalie Croteau
- Barbara Daigneault
- Anne-Marie Edward
- Maud Haviernick
- Maryse Laganière
- Maryse Leclair
- Anne-Marie Lemay
- Sonia Pelletier
- Michèle Richard
- Annie St-Arneault
- Annie Turcotte
- Barbara Klucznik-Widajewicz
“We honour these women, annually, on Dec. 6, by recognizing the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women,” states a press release from the municipality, Friday.
“The Municipality of Kincardine’s flags will be flying at half-mast in recognition of these 14 senselessly-murdered women, and for others like them, tragically killed by gender-based violence.”
Dec. 6 is a call to action to learn more about gender-based violence, and to speak up against harmful behaviours. It also falls within the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence which uses the social media hashtag #16Days to help normalize the conversation and allows individuals an opportunity to share how they are being a part of the solution.
