Witness to history
I’m sitting at the computer in April, 2025.
For the past few weeks, my Facebook has been filled with posts urging me to “Buy Canadian” or telling me, “These products are produced in Canada.”
In the grocery stores, red flags decorate the aisles, helping me decide which juice or vegetables or fruit are “Products of Canada.” News reports encourage us to “Keep Canada Strong.”
So, what’s all the fuss about? Because United States (U.S.) president Donald Trump has been making threats against us. He will destroy our economy and absorb us into the U.S.
Of course, Canada has reacted! With the federal election April 28, the question asked most often is, “Who will best represent us as this argument progresses?”
Both print and rhetoric exhort us to support Canadian businesses, support Canadian farmers.
You can imagine my surprise when I opened a box of family treasures yesterday and came upon this well-worn postcard.
I think it had been stored away by Norm’s great-grandfather, Daniel Edge, or perhaps his grandfather, W.J. Ritchie. I am guessing this message was being publicized at the beginning of the First World War and I am sure it was taken seriously.
Have Canadians followed this urging faithfully enough for all these years so that now in this era, our country will continue to play an important role in the world?
We are witnessing history!
