Kincardine man pleased to see municipal flag to be raised May 13
To the Editor:

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Kincardine council and staff for approving my request to have the municipal flag raised from May 13-27, in the municipality.

I also thank the Multicultural Celebration committee for accepting this flag-raising as an addition to the Multicultural event celebrations.

Flags will be raised on the three official municipal flag poles, located at the Kincardine Library, the Davidson Centre and the Tiverton Fire Hall.

The primary ceremonial flag will be raised Tuesday, May 13, at 10 a.m., at the Kincardine Library. The time and date are subject to change and will be identified either by myself or the municipality.

It is also my hope that councillors, municipal staff and members of the community will collectively be in attendance to celebrate this initiative.

My objective of raising a municipal flag is two-fold: To promote unity within all demographics of our community; and to promote unity within all geographical regions of our community.

Demographic - No matter what your age, no matter what your gender, no matter what your race or ethnicity, and no matter whether you have a disability or are able-bodied, we are all valuable members of our community.

Geographic - Whether you live in the Town of Kincardine or the Village of Tiverton, whether you live in the Hamlet of Inverhuron, North Bruce, Underwood, Glammis, Armow, Bervie, Millarton or our farming community, we are all valuable members of the Municipality of Kincardine.

The strength of our municipality is the sum of the aforementioned demographic and geographic objectives.

It is my hope that we can all collectively get a sense of identity, a sense of inclusion, a sense of pride, a sense of belonging and a sense of acceptance through the simple gesture of raising a municipal flag, not unlike the same sense of pride we feel when looking at our beautiful Canadian flag.

In closing, please mark this date and location in your calendar and if you share the same sentiments, come to the Kincardine Library May 13 at 10 a.m. to celebrate the raising of the municipal flag.

I hope this celebration can become an annual tradition to remind all of us what a great community we live in, and that inclusion rather than division is our primary goal.

Unfortunately, due to agreeing to an alternate date to raise the flag from my original request with the municipality, I will not be able to personally attend the ceremony. My wife, Sharon, will be there to represent me and witness this meaningful event.

I will, however, be there in spirit and will view the flags with pride upon my return to Kincardine.

Sincerely,
Neil Geoghegan
Kincardine
