Volunteers assist with annual PRWIN community tree-planting
About 50 people joined the Pine River Watershed Initiative Network (PRWIN) at the annual community tree-planting day, Saturday morning, at the farm of Dan and Jenny Middelkamp in Huron-Kinloss Township.
It was a cool, dry day, as the PRWIN welcomed volunteers from the 2nd Kincardine Scouts, Sawjan Samanvay Sanatan Centre, Point Clark Beach Association, Enbridge, RBC staff and PRWIN families, working together to plant the seedlings.
The site was a partnership with the Middelkamps and is supported by the Ontario Agricultural Sustainability Initiative, the Resilient Agricultural Landscape Program, which provides funding to support Ontario farmers in making their agricultural lands more productive and resilient.
The volunteers hand-planted 1,000 white spruce, 2,000 white cedar, 100 red oiser dogwood and 250 high-bush cranberry bushes. The planting site is a river flat area located on farmland. This tree-planting will improve soil health, reduce erosion and provide habitat for birds and insects, and protect against the wind.

The PRWIN thanks the landowners for providing a gathering location after the planting to have lunch with the community volunteers and for providing PRWIN T-shirts to the volunteers. Special thank you to Miller Insurance for hosting the lunch.
Thank you to the tireless and energetic directors and community volunteers!
