Members of Kincardine council and staff, several Kincardine Lions, and members of the public gathered Tuesday morning, at the Kincardine Library, to raise the municipal flag as a sign of unity.

Prompted by Kincardine resident Neil Geoghegan, who was represented at the event by his wife, Sharon, the municipal flag was also raised at the Davidson Centre in Kincardine, and the Tiverton Fire Hall, and will fly through May 27.

Geoghegan said his objective was to promote unity within all demographics of the community, and within all geographical regions of the community.

“It is my hope that we can all collectively get a sense of identity, a sense of inclusion, a sense of pride, a sense of belonging and a sense of acceptance through the simple gesture of raising a municipal flag, not unlike the same sense of pride we feel when looking at our beautiful Canadian flag,” he said.

“I hope this celebration can become an annual tradition to remind all of us what a great community we live in, and that inclusion rather than division is our primary goal.”

Prior to the flag-raising, mayor Kenneth Craig said the event ties in well with the Kincardine Multicultural Celebration, slated for Tuesday evening at the Davidson Centre.

“We appreciate and celebrate in the context of community,” he said. “We work together as a sum of all our separate parts.”
