Huron United continues strong start to season with 3-1 win over Suspects SFC
The Huron United Football Club maintained its winning ways with the second victory of the young season, Tuesday, May 27, at Spinrite Field in Listowel, dispatching the Suspects SFC of Kitchener by a score of 3-1.
Huron United was the early victim of an unfortunate bounce when a Suspects cross caught the flailing hand of centre-back Masoom Saromie in the opening minute. Goalkeeper Josh Coleman made the correct read on the resulting penalty, but the Suspects' spot-kick narrowly escaped Coleman’s outstretched hands to give the Kitchener club an early lead.
The Huron United team responded well to the inauspicious start by focusing on possession retention and careful marking. Midfielders Ryan Schriek, Jihu Kim, and Drew Cobean exchanged quick touches and overlapping runs to generate a series of attacking chances.
The team’s breakthrough came on a lofted through ball from co-captain Jacob Hunsburger that rewarded a timely run from striker Adam Carty. Carty, fresh off a brace in the opening match, smartly chipped the bouncing ball over the rushing Suspects keeper to level the score in the 24th minute.
After a few nervy Huron United touches in its own half forced Coleman and centre-backs Saromie and Shady Dahrouj into timely clearances, the squad found its footing again as half-time neared. A late Huron United surge was initiated by an Oscar-worthy feint from Cobean, who sent holding midfielder Simon Andonian streaking down the left flank.
The unfortunate Suspects fullback was no match for the hulking Andonian, who shrugged off his mark before cutting the ball back to striker Jason Leiskau whose powerful strike left the crossbar vibrating well after the half-time whistle.
Fresh off a Scottish sojourn, defender Murray Martin teed up a stretch pass from a free kick deep in his own half in the 73rd minute. The soaring pass skipped by the Suspects keeper, allowing Cobean to leisurely dribble over the goal line to give Huron United a 2-1 lead.
A. Carty secured the result in the 93rd minute after a Cobean cross picked him out at the top corner of the box. Carty stepped around his marker before curling a strike in off the right post, maintaining his blistering scoring pace to start the campaign.
The squad voted Dahrouj as Man of the Match with honourable mentions shared by Cobean, Andonian, and Coleman.
