Ontario Power Generation announces new scholarships and awards
Ontario Power Generation (OPG) has launched new skilled trades scholarships.

Back in March, Mark Welt, director, NSS-Western, and Brent Fisher, senior manager, corporate relations and projects, presented a cheque for $3,000 to Georgian College’s executive director, Dave Shorey, and power engineering program co-ordinator, Dr. Aaron Pollock.

Each year, for the next three years, a student in Georgian’s second semester of a skilled trades program will be selected to receive a $1,000 scholarship. This funding has been provided through OPG’s Power for Change Project which allows the company to give back to the communities where it operates.

“OPG’s Western Waste Management Facility has been operating in the region for more than 50 years,” said Welt. “The continued development and retention of skilled tradespeople in the region is essential to the nuclear industry and we encourage the next generation of students to explore opportunities with OPG.”

OPG is also offering a new local welding student award.

In April, OPG representatives, Jason York, senior manager, maintenance, and Nicole Schmidt, senior communications advisor, presented a $1,000 OPG Power for Change award to Fanshawe College – Bruce County, which will select and disperse the funds to a local welding student.

OPG is leading an energy transformation, and to do so, the need for skilled trades continues to grow. Each partnership is an opportunity to promote skilled trades as a viable career path for students to help build the labour pipeline needed to electrify life in one generation.

Thanks to Fanshawe College – Bruce County for partnering with OPG to deliver these funds locally.
