Community celebrates official opening of Tiverton Lions Splash Pad
Kincardine mayor Kenneth Craig joined a group of children and adults as they played in the sprinklers and cascades of water at the new Tiverton Lions Splash Pad.
The official opening was held Saturday afternoon, at the facility which is located adjacent to the playground, between the Tiverton Sports Centre and the Lions Hall.
Tiverton Lion Jim McTeer, who has spearheaded this project since it was first brought to Kincardine council two years ago, thanked the companies, groups and individuals from the Tiverton community who donated toward the splash pad.
“Special thanks to Steve Hunter and the Hunter family for their huge donation that kick-started the fund-raising campaign,” he said. “I’m so glad this day has finally come.”
He also offered appreciation to Kent Faye and his company, Diamond Head Sprinklers, which built the splash pad; the Tiverton Lions for their support throughout the project; and the Municipality of Kincardine for designating the use of the land and assisting in the servicing of the splash pad.
McTeer gave special acknowledgement to Arya Quipp, 7, and her five-year-old sister, Emilia, of Tiverton for their initiative and hard work in raising more than $500 for the project because they wanted a splash pad in their community.
Craig said this is one of the joys of being part of municipal council – making a decision at the council table and then seeing it become a reality.
“The Tiverton Lions brought this idea forward and fund-raised for it,” he said, “and now this beautiful splash pad will be a benefit to the community for years to come.”
Following the ribbon-cutting, Arya and Emilia hit the button and the splash pad came to life.
Despite the overcast, chilly weather, Craig and a group of children and adults enjoyed the sprays of water, especially the big bucket that filled with water and then tipped it on everyone.
The Tiverton Lions also held a barbecue for the hungry crowd.
