WWMF LICENCE RENEWAL

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is committed to keeping the community informed about the Western Waste Management Facility (WWMF) in Bruce County. This facility, operated by the Nuclear Sustainability Services team, safely manages low- and intermediate-level nuclear waste from Bruce County, Darlington and Pickering generating stations, and also provides interim storage for Bruce Power’s used fuel.

The facility operates under a Waste Facility Operating Licence. The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC)’s licence-renewal process allows OPG to demonstrate its continued commitment to the safety of the public, its workers and the environment. The facility operating licence is valid until May 31, 2027, and it is on-track to submit its renewal application to the CNSC by the end of this year.

OPG will continue to share updates on the licence renewal process in future editions of the E-newsletter, on www.opg.com, and through social media channels. Stay tuned for details about upcoming engagement opportunities. For more information about the licence renewal process, visit the CNSC website or OPG’s Operating Licences page.

BOOKS IN THE BRUCE – SUMMER READING ADVENTURES

Books in the Bruce is a free literacy program dedicated to creating fun reading opportunities for local children and their families. During the summer months, the popular literacy walks invite local families to explore Kincardine’s scenic trails, where enlarged book pages are displayed along the path for a self-guided reading adventure.

Once per month, participating families walk the trail reading the book along the way, receiving a free copy of the featured book, snacks and refreshments at the end. OPG is proud to sponsor the summer literacy walks with funding provided through OPG’s Power for Change Project.

YOUNG PROFESSIONALS NETWORK

July 18, 22 representatives of the Society of United Professionals – Young Professionals Network visited the Bruce site for an informative day of tours at OPG’s waste facility and Bruce Power’s Bruce “B” generating station. Attendees enjoyed their time on-site and sent the following words of appreciation:

"This was the first time the network steering committee visited North America’s largest nuclear power plant and OPG’s waste facility,” said Elton Nazareth, network co-chairperson and OPG assistant technical engineer, enterprise emergency management. “We enjoyed networking and learning about the Bruce site’s unique history. Highlights included seeing the Lutetium-177 isotope system and the dry storage facility. Many thanks to the Society, Bruce Power, and OPG for giving us this behind-the-scenes opportunity."

NII ENERGY CO-OP CLASS SHOWCASE

In June, the Nuclear Innovation Institute (NII)’s 2025 class of energy co-op students celebrated its learning journey and featured what it perceived to be highlights of the time in the program. Brent Fisher, OPG senior manager of corporate relations and projects, attended the celebratory event and was thrilled to see OPG’s three-day session with the students at the waste facility as a featured display.
