Beautiful, sunny day for annual Kincardine Marine Heritage Festival
It was a beautiful, sunny day as a crowd turned out for the annual Kincardine Marine Heritage Festival, held Saturday at the Kincardine Harbour.
The Toronto Brigantine tall ship, Playfair, was at the north pier, with the crew greeting people and talking about the ship. Tours were delayed until Sunday because of the high dock beside the boat. The ship was remaining in Kincardine until Monday when it was set to sail on to Goderich.
Operated by Brigs Youth Sail Training, a Hamilton-based charity, the Playfair’s mission is to provide experiential learning adventures for youth, aged 13-18. With the exception of the captain and first mate, all the crew are teenagers. The ship holds two adults and 26 youth.
The Playfair sails primarily on the Great Lakes and is also available for private bookings. For more information, call 416-596-7117, or on-line at
www.brigs.ca.
The Marine Heritage Festival also featured tours of the Kincardine Lighthouse and the Walker House, a close-up look at the Mysis Rescue Boat and the South Bruce OPP Marine Unit patrol boat, and a display of water safety information and water rescue equipment by Kincardine Fire and Emergency Services and Huron and Area Search and Rescue.
The Bruce County Library’s Bookmobile and two local authors were also on hand for the event.
