​New orthopedic surgeon joins Wingham, Listowel hospitals

The Listowel Wingham Hospitals Alliance has announced the addition of Dr. Hany Asham, an orthopedic surgeon, now practising at both Wingham and Listowel hospitals.

This recruitment marks a significant step toward enhancing local surgical capacity and improving access to specialized care for patients closer to home, states a press release from the alliance, issued Monday.

Asham is currently accepting referrals and offers a range of same-day orthopedic procedures that previously required travel to larger centres, such as London and Stratford. By providing these services locally, the hospital alliance is easing travel burdens, reducing wait-times, and offering family physicians more options to support their patients within the community.

Procedures now available at the hospitals in Wingham and Listowel include:
 

• Carpal tunnel release
• Trigger finger release
• Ganglion excision
• Knee arthroscopy
• Bunionectomy
• Hammer toe correction
• First MTP joint fusion

“Having Dr. Hany Asham join our surgical team means that patients can receive specialized procedures right here at home, without the added burden of travelling long distances,” said Esther Millar, president and chief executive officer of the hospital alliance. “This is a clear example of how physician recruitment directly benefits our patients and our community.”

With new orthopedic services now available, the alliance is encouraging local physicians to refer their patients directly to local surgeons. This involves reaching out to family physicians’ offices to promote the expanded range of procedures available at Wingham and Listowel.

“We are at an important moment of growth and progress in our local health system,” said Stacey Ash, hospital alliance board chairperson. “There is new surgical capacity available right here in our hospitals, and we are urging local referrals. Every new physician we add enhances care and decreases the need for patients to travel outside the region.”
